Durante esta jornada se desarrolló en el Centro Cultural Padre Luis Gil el seminario “Garra de León & Desierto Florido”, un espacio de encuentro y reflexión científica sobre la biodiversidad, conservación y valor ecosistémico del Desierto Florido en nuestra zona.

La instancia reunió a destacados expositores e investigadoras e investigadores que compartieron sus conocimientos sobre percepción remota, conservación biocultural y estrategias para resguardar especies como la emblemática Garra de León.

Esta actividad fue organizada por el Gobierno Regional de Atacama, la Ilustre Municipalidad de Huasco, la SEREMI del Medio Ambiente y CONAF, en el marco de las acciones de puesta en valor y protección del patrimonio natural del Desierto de Huasco.

Hoy celebramos el Día de los Patrimonios con una hermosa jornada de memoria y cultura en “La Biblioteca del Tiempo: Entre Libros y Recuerdos”. Una exposición cargada de historia, donde vecinos y vecinas se reencontraron con el pasado a través de libros, fotografías antiguas y objetos patrimoniales que narran la identidad de nuestra comuna.

Fue una instancia de conversación, recuerdos compartidos, anécdotas entrañables y valoración del patrimonio cultural que nos une y nos define como comunidad.

Agradecemos y felicitamos al equipo de la Biblioteca Municipal José Santos Ossa por la organización de esta emotiva actividad, y a cada expositor por aportar con su valioso material a esta experiencia tan significativa para Huasco.

La entrada Programa Mujeres Jefas de Hogar se publicó primero en Ilustre Municipalidad de Huasco.

Proyecto financiado por el Ministerio del Deporte e IND, es parte del Plan “Paso a Paso Chile Se Recupera”. 

El anhelo de contar con un recinto deportivo de primer nivel para la práctica deportiva se empezó a cumplir este jueves para la comunidad huasquina, con el inicio de las obras de Conservación del Estadio Techado “Luis Rojas Araya” que tiene una inversión de 728 millones de pesos del “Plan Paso a Paso Chile Se Recupera”, anunciado por el presidente Sebastián Piñera, el cual contempla una gran inversión pública que ayudará a la creación de nuevos empleos.  

En la firma de actas y entrega de llaves a la empresa Constructora RCR SPA para que inicie los trabajos, el Delegado Presidencial, Patricio Urquieta, acompañado de la Delegada Presidencial Provincial de Huasco, Nelly Galeb, señaló la importancia de estas obras que beneficiarán a toda la comunidad de la Provincia del Huasco: 

“Esta es una muy buena noticia porque nos va a permitir mejorar y elevar el estándar que tiene el recinto deportivo para que los deportistas puedan practicar de mejor manera las disciplinas que están desarrollando el interior de la comuna y sobre todo poder albergar competencias de nivel nacional e internacional, porque se van a cumplir con todos los estándares exigidos por las normativas que regulan las distintas disciplinas deportivas. Estamos realizando una inversión que supera los 700 millones de pesos, contemplada dentro del Plan “Paso a Paso Chile se Recupera” que ha liderado el Presidente Piñera precisamente para poder crear empleos en todos los lugares y aquí se da la particularidad de que hemos contratado una empresa local que va a contratar a más de 100 personas para el desarrollo de esta tarea y esperamos que se pueda cumplir dentro del plazo de un año a fin de que esté disponible para el uso de la comunidad”, señaló Patricio Urquieta. 

 Igualmente, el Seremi del Deporte, Guillermo Procuriza, quien estuvo con la Directora Regional del IND, Maritza Vera, indicó: “Este recinto necesita que se realicen una serie de obras para que vuelva a estar en las mejores condiciones para su uso, por lo que estamos muy contentos de poder avanzar en esta iniciativa que a nivel nacional se trabajó en conjunto con cada uno de los Gobiernos Regionales para contar con más y mejores espacios deportivos. La inversión en infraestructura deportiva será un motor generador de trabajo, y en el caso del Techado de Huasco, se estima en 139 puestos de empleos directos como indirectos, generados por Mindep-IND”.  

 Asimismo, el alcalde de Huasco, Genaro Briceño, acompañado de algunos concejales y del equipo Secpla, manifestó sobre esta obra: “La recuperación de este espacio era una deuda pendiente con los deportistas de la comuna y el desarrollo pleno que debe tener el básquetbol, el vóleibol, el baby fútbol. Acá hay historia. Hay campeonatos de verano del básquetbol, del baby fútbol y también finales históricas con el vóleibol del Liceo Japón (…) Estamos viendo con el Seremi del Deporte la posibilidad de que el municipio presente un proyecto a través del Gobierno Regional para la construcción de la Casa del Deportista”. 

Obras  

Entre los trabajos que se tiene contemplado realizar en el recinto, que es propiedad del IND y administrado por la Municipalidad del puerto, están: cambio de la superficie de juego por una de poliuretano; reposición de revestimiento lateral y de techumbre; nueva luminaria considerando el paso a la tecnología Led, que se traduce en mejor iluminación a un menor costo en la operación del recinto; reposición de todos los artefactos ya sean WC o lavamanos, con sus respectivos kit de grifería y  barras de seguridad; incorporación de un sector con accesibilidad universal en las graderías; instalación de marcador electrónico y tablero de básquetbol, además de set de vóleibol profesional.  

Todo esto con el fin de albergar la actividad física y deportiva de la comunidad con los más altos estándares de accesibilidad, eficiencia energética y vanguardia.

The bodies were lying in the streets un-buried. All railroads and vessels carrying food and such things into the great city had ceased runnings and mobs of the hungry poor were pillaging the stores and warehouses. Murder and robbery and drunkenness were everywhere. Already the people had fled from the city by millions—at first the rich, in their private motor-cars and dirigibles, and then the great mass of the population, on foot, carrying the plague with them, themselves starving and pillaging the farmers and all the towns and villages on the way.

Safe venues for citizens

“The man who sent this news, the wireless operator, was alone with his instrument on the top of a lofty building. The people remaining in the city—he estimated them at several hundred thousand—had gone mad from fear and drink, and on all sides of him great fires were raging. He was a hero, that man who staid by his post—an obscure newspaperman, most likely.

“For twenty-four hours, he said, no transatlantic airships had arrived, and no more messages were coming from England. He did state, though, that a message from Berlin—that’s in Germany—announced that Hoffmeyer, a bacteriologist of the Metchnikoff School, had discovered the serum for the plague. That was the last word, to this day, that we of America ever received from Europe. If Hoffmeyer discovered the serum, it was too late, or otherwise, long ere this, explorers from Europe would have come looking for us. We can only conclude that what happened in America happened in Europe, and that, at the best, some several score may have survived the Scarlet Death on that whole continent.

“For one day longer the despatches continued to come from New York. Then they, too, ceased. The man who had sent them, perched in his lofty building, had either died of the plague or been consumed in the great conflagrations he had described as raging around him. And what had occurred in New York had been duplicated in all the other cities. It was the same in San Francisco, and Oakland, and Berkeley. By Thursday the people were dying so rapidly that their corpses could not be handled, and dead bodies lay everywhere. Thursday night the panic outrush for the country began. Imagine, my grandsons, people, thicker than the salmon-run you have seen on the Sacramento river, pouring out of the cities by millions, madly over the country, in vain attempt to escape the ubiquitous death. You see, they carried the germs with them. Even the airships of the rich, fleeing for mountain and desert fastnesses, carried the germs.

“Hundreds of these airships escaped to Hawaii, and not only did they bring the plague with them, but they found the plague already there before them. This we learned, by the despatches, until all order in San Francisco vanished, and there were no operators left at their posts to receive or send. It was amazing, astounding, this loss of communication with the world. It was exactly as if the world had ceased, been blotted out. For sixty years that world has no longer existed for me. I know there must be such places as New York, Europe, Asia, and Africa; but not one word has been heard of them—not in sixty years. With the coming of the Scarlet Death the world fell apart, absolutely, irretrievably. Ten thousand years of culture and civilization passed in the twinkling of an eye, ‘lapsed like foam.’

“I was telling about the airships of the rich. They carried the plague with them and no matter where they fled, they died. I never encountered but one survivor of any of them—Mungerson. He was afterwards a Santa Rosan, and he married my eldest daughter. He came into the tribe eight years after the plague. He was then nineteen years old, and he was compelled to wait twelve years more before he could marry. You see, there were no unmarried women, and some of the older daughters of the Santa Rosans were already bespoken. So he was forced to wait until my Mary had grown to sixteen years. It was his son, Gimp-Leg, who was killed last year by the mountain lion.

Educated consumers are more likely to help protect their drinking water sources and to appreciate the true costs of safe drinking water.

At first I regarded little but the road before me, and then abruptly my attention was arrested by something that was moving rapidly down the opposite slope of Maybury Hill. At first I took it for the wet roof of a house, but one flash following another showed it to be in swift rolling movement. It was an elusive vision a moment of bewildering darkness, and then, in a flash like daylight, the red masses of the Orphanage near the crest of the hill, the green tops of the pine trees, and this problematical object came out clear and sharp and bright.

I was even afraid that that last fusillade I had heard might mean the extermination of our invaders from Mars. I can best express my state of mind by saying that I wanted to be in at the death.

It was nearly eleven when I started to return. The night was unexpectedly dark; to me, walking out of the lighted passage of my cousins’ house, it seemed indeed black, and it was as hot and close as the day. Overhead the clouds were driving fast, albeit not a breath stirred the shrubs about us. My cousins’ man lit both lamps. Happily, I knew the road intimately. My wife stood in the light of the doorway, and watched me until I jumped up into the dog cart. Then abruptly she turned and went in, leaving my cousins side by side wishing me good hap.

I was a little depressed at first with the contagion of my wife’s fears, but very soon my thoughts reverted to the Martians. At that time I was absolutely in the dark as to the course of the evening’s fighting. I did not know even the circumstances that had precipitated the conflict. As I came through Ockham (for that was the way I returned, and not through Send and Old Woking) I saw along the western horizon a blood-red glow, which as I drew nearer, crept slowly up the sky. The driving clouds of the gathering thunderstorm mingled there with masses of black and red smoke.

Ripley Street was deserted, and except for a lighted window or so the village showed not a sign of life; but I narrowly escaped an accident at the corner of the road to Pyrford, where a knot of people stood with their backs to me. They said nothing to me as I passed. I do not know what they knew of the things happening beyond the hill, nor do I know if the silent houses I passed on my way were sleeping securely, or deserted and empty, or harassed and watching against the terror of the night.

From Ripley until I came through Pyrford I was in the valley of the Wey, and the red glare was hidden from me. As I ascended the little hill beyond Pyrford Church the glare came into view again, and the trees about me shivered with the first intimation of the storm that was upon me. Then I heard midnight pealing out from Pyrford Church behind me, and then came the silhouette of Maybury Hill, with its tree-tops and roofs black and sharp against the red.

Even as I beheld this a lurid green glare lit the road about me and showed the distant woods towards Addlestone. I felt a tug at the reins. I saw that the driving clouds had been pierced as it were by a thread of green fire, suddenly lighting their confusion and falling into the field to my left. It was the third falling star!

Close on its apparition, and blindingly violet by contrast, danced out the first lightning of the gathering storm, and the thunder burst like a rocket overhead. The horse took the bit between his teeth and bolted.
